Saving The Planet, One Social Media Post At A Time

Influencers are the trend-setters of today’s modern technological age. Many of them provide lifestyle, fashion, and cooking inspiration for audiences far and wide. However, with the shift of most social media sites to marketing and consumerism, some influencers are also traditionally known to be “walking ads.” Sponsored deals lead influencers to promote products they may not be fully knowledgeable about. There is nothing wrong with individuals with a large following wanting to make a profit, but with such an authoritative position of power on the Internet, it is important for them to raise awareness of prevalent world issues. Having an influential voice is a privilege. For some users, Instagram and Twitter may be the only news sources available, so it is vital that those with a resounding voice speak up.

It is not news that a climate crisis is upon us, but many people are unaware of all of the facts. Increasing education regarding climate change and how to combat its effects online are extremely paramount. Heightening awareness of the relation between climate change and the fashion industry is an important facet of that conversation. Social media could be a powerful tool in the climate consciousness movement, if used shrewdly. Since many influencers pridefully flaunt their fashion choices, they possess the quintessential opportunity to share important knowledge with their followers. It is not a duty by any means, but it is surely an admirable choice to use social media as an educational platform.

Below, PhotoBook caught up with some current environmental influencers who are doing their part to make a difference by spreading messages online to their followers about the importance of ensuring we are taking care of this place we call home.

Stephanie van den Sigtenhorst

Stephanie van den Sigtenhorst is an Amsterdam-based sustainable fashion advocate and author of “A Sustainable Wardrobe.” For her, sustainability is not a passing fad but is a way of living her life. She shares tips with her followers about how to create capsule wardrobes, how to find amazing sustainable brands, and DIY tricks to extend the wear of your garments.

Why do you think it is important to bring awareness to environmentalism and sustainability on social media?
I think it's important to use social media to reach young generations.  I also think it's a nice way to show what you can do in everyday life to make more conscious choices. I always try to focus on what we can do as I like to keep things positive, and I think it's exciting to learn how you can do things differently.

How do you practice consciousness in your everyday shopping/fashion choices? When it comes to fashion I really look at what I need. I try to make a wishlist and do some research to find the best item for it. I always check if I can buy something second hand. It always feels so much more special when you find that one of a kind gem.

Maggie Zhou

Maggie is a writer and co-host of a podcast called “Culture Club.” When she is not busy sharing her knowledge through her words, she shares her knowledge of slow fashion through Instagram.

Why do you think it is important to bring awareness to environmentalism and sustainability on social media? Using my platform for good is a privilege and is something I don't take lightly. The Internet makes education more accessible and more engaging, which hopefully allows more people to be included in the conversation.

How do you practice consciousness in your everyday shopping/fashion choices? I try to be conscious about my purchases and ask whether I really need something. Asking myself whether I'll actually wear an item 30 times before I buy it helps.

Chloe Helen Miles

Chloe Helen Miles is a United Kingdom-based sustainable style and lifestyle influencer who shares tips about how to invest in more minimal fashion habits. She practices consciousness in her everyday shopping and fashion choices by cutting out fast fashion completely, patching up old, damaged clothing so it can have increased longevity.  She even works as a vintage curator for Great Britain-based Slow Vintage Shop.

These are just three influencers who attempt to open the conversation about climate awareness and how we can make small, everyday changes in our fashion routines or habits that will positively impact the environment. Social media has many functions, but one of the most impactful applications of the online world is using it as a mighty educational tool. You can take a look at Stephanie, Maggie, and Chloe’s social media pages and practice more sustainable choices when it comes to your wardrobe.
