Pablo Thecuadro, Spanish Photographer & Collage Artist

His work has caught the attention of several brands and magazines, and his clients include L'Officiel Magazine, Lacoste, W Magazine, Nike, and more.

When did you become interested in photography?
When I was 12, maybe. I was interested in taking memories of everything.

It’s interesting how photographs can take on a new mood or meaning once deconstructed or combined with other images. What inspired you to start creating these collages?
I was in the superior grade of Artistic Photography, and had a final project, which was to complete a collage. With this one, we had to show the teachers all of our references, and I thought about showing them through the collage technique. I had that idea because I went to a little workshop operated  by Susana Blasco, one of my collage references. I always knew I’d love to make something art related. The transition from photography to collage was easy. I learned about composition and that helped me to make collages. The composition is the common factor in the techniques I studied.

What do you want your work to represent?
That there are layers in our personality, sometimes it’s necessary in your life to protect yourself, but you have to be careful not to lose yourself too much. I’m an introvert and a shy person, so it takes time for me to be comfortable with people. I like to use the negative space in my work to reflect that hidden part, there’s apparently nothing in there, but it’s still there and it’s part of the composition.

Are there any other creators that you look to for inspiration?
Nick Knight, Susana Blasco, and Jesse Draxler.

How long does it typically take to create a collage?
It depends. The beginning of a collage starts when I find pictures in a magazine that I like and I think I can make something beautiful with them. Finishing it sometimes could be hard, but I try to stop when I get a good and balanced composition.

You combine fashion and art in a unique way. Does your work influence your personal fashion taste or vice versa?
I don’t know, I usually wear really simple clothes.

What’s your favorite collage that you’ve done?
It depends on the day.

What has been your proudest achievement so far?
It’s a general achievement, but I’m so proud that I can make a living out of collage-making.

Do you have a dream collaboration?
I really, really would love to make album covers. Lady Gaga, FKA Twigs, Caroline Polachek or Sega Bodega are some of my favorite musicians.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t creating?
Playing video games and reading manga.
