When did you realize that you wanted to pursue acting?
Like most things in life, I never had a definitive moment where I knew I wanted to pursue acting. Rather, I had a myriad of enigmatical moments that lead me to pursue acting. And most of those moments occurred subconsciously. I’d like to believe that my innate desire to play and feel what the people around me felt were my first moments of curiosity around acting. When I was around 13, and acquired a vocabulary for those experiences, I told my parents I would like to give acting a shot. From then on, and thousands of hours of acting classes later, I’ve grown obsessed with the pursuit of acting. Everyone who carries an interest with acting should without a doubt act on those impulses. (Pun fully intended)

What was your favorite part of filming “Hustle”?
The moment on set that brought me the most joy was filming the dinner scene with Adam, Queen, and Juancho. We were about two weeks into shooting, so we were all well acquainted with one another. And that day was not only a total breeze but also an opportunity earnestly to connect as a cast. Queen and Adam were making Juancho and me laugh so hard that day that I almost couldn’t keep a straight face while filming the scenes. Hustle has such a delightful cast and that day in particular shined a spotlight on it.

How did you prepare for the role of Alex Sugerman?
Surprisingly, I spent most of my preparation watching 1970s horror movies for the role of Alex. During my first zoom meeting with the director, the incomparable Jeremiah Zagar, I asked him what his favorite films were, which led to conversations of what might my character, Alex, be in her favorite films. So, we theorized, and he gave me a list of movies I should watch in order to understand Alex’s taste. I watched them all, and even created a fake Letterboxd account (an app I describe as Spotify but for movies) for my character. From the works of John Carpenter to Brian De Palma to Dario Argento, I tried to cover as much ground as I could.

Who is your dream actor/actress to work with?
I will say I dream to work with Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, and Olivia Colman until I am blue in the face. Their work inspires and ignites me every day. In fall of 2021, I was doing a play at the wonderful Echo Theater Company. During my rehearsal period, I obsessively watched a documentary about Cate Blanchett preparing for the role of Hedda Gabler on Broadway  every day. When the show went up, I recited a quote from Sarah Paulson to keep me connected before every time I went on stage. And I had Olivia Colman only ever podcast appearance, “David Tennet Does a Podcast With Olivia Colman,” on repeat for my drive home from the theater. It’s safe to say that all three of those women are my acting gods.

What advice would you give to individuals your age trying to pursue acting?
It’s impossible to come up with a singular piece of advice to give to individuals trying to pursue acting. So, my greatest piece of advice would be to never stop seeking advice. Because the pursuit of acting is the endless journey of learning and representing your curiosities. So, the faster you strengthen the muscle to not only inquire but also to assimilate the answers of what you inquire, the faster you will become an adept actor. In short, never stop being curious and never stop listening.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I spend most of my days toggling music, sports, surfing, reading, gardening, and hanging out with my close circle of friends. Oh, and of course, answering questions for Photobook Magazine.

What are some of your career goals?
First and foremost, I hope my career is rooted in longevity, excellence, and service. I hope my career emulates the likes of those previously stated, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson and Olivia Colman. The way they straddle film, television, and theater as well as work with people at the top of their game in each category, would be the end goal for me and my career.
