Major Brands Partner with UEBT to Set the Standard for Ethical Practices

It is our differences that make us uniquely ourselves, and in those differences and intricacies is immense beauty. UEBT, the Union for Ethical Biotrade,  values those differences, especially when it comes to nature and natural resources. Preserving biodiversity is important to the healthy longevity of our planet, and UEBT seeks to disseminate this message through their meritorious work. The non-profit prioritizes ethical sourcing and the protection of biodiversity by assisting notable beauty, nutritional, and pharmaceutical brands in sourcing high-quality ingredients. They set the bar high for companies and suppliers, showing that it is possible to create palatable products while also making positive environmental progress.

Most of the companies that UEBT partners with are household names — including some beloved fashion houses’ makeup subsects, like Christian Dior and Givenchy. PhotoBook has compiled a list below of some of the most notable UEBT-partnered brands below, to highlight the amazing work they are accomplishing and the standard they have established for conscious production and sourcing.

Fresh Cosmetics
Since 1991, Fresh Cosmetics has made its own declaration of environmental conservation through combining natural ingredients and effective products. The company sources ingredients with a true regard for the natural world, by partnering with the UEBT to improve and inform its methods.  Fresh even declares that 100% of their ingredients are traceable to an exact region.

Christian Dior Parfums
The French fashion house expanded into beauty and skincare in the  1980s, but a lot has changed since then. At Dior’s laboratories, professionals use more than 600 analytical processes to evaluate the ingredients and every final product. Through partnering with the UEBT, the brand sources cleaner ingredients and prohibits the use of other, less clean ones. Dior’s “off-limits” ingredients list includes those such as harmful BHAs, preservatives which release formaldehyde, aluminum salts, preservatives which release formaldehyde, aluminum salts, and more. Many of their luxurious scents actually consist of natural flower scents, grown in lush flower gardens in Grasse, France.

Clarins
Clarins has provided top-notch skincare since the 1950s. Professionals run the company when it comes to the skincare game, but the company recently joined the UEBT’s roster of brands, partnering with the European Union in 2019. Clarins went as far as to declare a plan of action, which they will resubmit every few years. This plan states that by 2025, Clarins wants to declare 100% sustainable sourcing.

Kenzo Parfums

Kenzo, along with other LVMH members – Dior and Givenchy – additionally joined in on this environmental conservation pledge. The brand has developed its own ethical production and sourcing plans, which will be revisited and reassessed for maximum environmental benefit every three years.

The Union for Ethical Biotrade has brought valuable lessons to the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and nutritional realms. Although it will take patience and dedication to realize this goal, it is that type of environmental regard that will bring us closer to preserving the world.
