PB Approved: Public Goods, A Brand That You Can Stay Safe & Breathe Easy

We are currently confronting many environmental issues that are harmful to nature and to our lives. Many of these issues result from human consumption of goods that are mass produced or are made from unsafe and harmful ingredients that are cheap and very affordable. It is basic human knowledge for us to favor the most cost-effective option for everything: who doesn’t want to save money? But we may be seriously damaging the environment when we buy cheap, mass-produced brands, such as  drugstore shampoos and conditioners. But Public Goods is a brand that is both extremely affordable and environmentally friendly.

When I first went on to the company’s website, I was overwhelmed by the number of products they offered. Public Goods is a healthy and sustainable brand that offers a wide range of products, from personal care to household items and even grocery products, Public Goods has it all and makes sure that each product is made in a way to care for the environment. Even more so, this company is in partnership with the Eden Reforestation Project, for every new Public Goods member, a tree is planted. We are actually planting a tree for every order that is placed, which means more trees! So, you can feel both safe and helpful knowing that your purchases go to something that benefits the earth.

The founder of Public Goods, Morgan Hirsh, got his inspiration for the company through an inspiration that is quite uncommon: ninjas. He thought that ninjas lived a minimalistic and simple lifestyle, a lifestyle he had hoped to achieve. In his 20s, Hirsh traveled around the world, discovering ideas for sustainability and saw eco-friendly companies. He met co-founder Mike Ferchak at a bar in China, and they immediately hit it off. After that moment, they started collaborating on different sustainable products that were cost effective. After moving to New York, he had the idea to come up with a membership model that delivers all your basic toiletry needs at the touch of a button. And just like that, Public Goods was formed. It is a service that makes healthy quality products affordable by shipping them directly to the consumer, instead of going through a retailer or distributor that typically increases the price of the product for much more than it really costs to make.

After reading the history of the brand and discovering its mission and everything it stands for, I was extremely excited to try the products. Everything about this company is sustainable, from the packaging down to the ingredients used. The brand is cruelty free and uses no harmful chemicals in its products, including food, household cleaners, and beauty products. Recently, I became more aware of how damaging ingredients such as parabens and sulfates that are commonly found in many hair and body products are. I was happy to find out that Public Goods is free of all of these. I received, by mail, some  of the company’s beauty products: the SPF 50 sunscreen, the body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and the Ayate washcloth. The craziest part is that each product cost me less than $10.  If I had walked into any drugstore and purchased shampoo or conditioner, most likely it  could have been more expensive and filled with a ton more harmful chemical. As soon as I opened the package, I noticed the packaging and how simple and modern it looked. No crazy designs or logos, such simple and clean black and white packaging, which I feel represents the aesthetic of the brand. The shampoo, conditioner, and body wash came in 12 oz bottles, and the sunscreen came in 6 oz, which is the perfect amount of product for me. I was excited to try the shampoo and conditioner because I am sucker for trying new hair products. When I first poured the shampoo into my hand, the first thing that caught my attention was the scent. Normally, I am not a big fan of super-scented products, but this smelt so clean and fresh. I was genuinely excited to put some of it in my hair. The scent for the shampoo and conditioner, as well as  the body wash, was the same. By the time I  got out of the shower, my bathroom and I smelt like a spa. The scent smells like a mix of eucalyptus and lemon, an excellent combination. I also used the Ayate washcloth to applicate the body wash. I never really use washcloths or sponges, but I liked this washcloth because it made me feel like I was exfoliating my body. On the back of each bottle, there is mention that the product is paraben free, vegan friendly, sulfate free, gluten free, natural fragrance, and cruelty free. So basically, there are no bad or unhealthy ingredients. After getting out of the shower and letting my hair dry, I noticed how good I still smelt and even how good my hair smelt. I even received a compliment later during the day about how good my hair smelt! My hair also felt extremely soft and fluffy, which I loved, and my skin felt extremely smooth. I even used these products again for a second day in a row, and I am continuing to smell fresh and clean, while also feeling fresh and clean.  I really loved getting to use these products because not only did I love the results, but I felt a sense of comfort knowing I am using something that is not filled with dangerous chemicals that are harming my skin and hair. More importantly, that are not harming the environment.

I highly recommend Public Goods. The products I used were amazing, and their price and ingredients made them even more special. I am excited to try the company’s other products, such as some of the groceries and household items. Even if you are not looking to live a healthier lifestyle, knowing how much you can get for such a small price and knowing that your purchase goes toward such a good cause is a definite deal breaker.
