How do you feel about the recent release of Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar
I’m so happy because it’s finally released. In the beginning I was sad because we couldn’t release the film in the movie theatres. But I realized it’s the perfect time to come out on streaming services because everyone needs a virtual vacation. Everyone needs a laugh and positive vibes.

How did you prepare for your role as Yoyo? How similar is the character to you in real life?
I prepared by practicing multi-tasking; bike-riding outside my house while singing and throwing newspapers. Yoyo is similar to me because Yoyo is loyal and never gives up. He also loves singing Barbra Streisand’s song “Guilty,” which I love too. We have some differenceses: Yoyo is mischievous, and I don’t think I’m that mischievous.

How was it working alongside a cast of big stars like Kristen Wiig, Jamie Dornan, Annie Mumolo and more?
I was nervous at first, but when I got to set. Kristen, Annie, and Jamie were kind, and I felt comfortable with them. I first met Kristen in the makeup room on set, and she came in with mosquito bites on her face and I said, “Oh my god, Kristen!” and we hugged each other. When I hugged her, she kind of smelled like the ocean. I felt an instant connection.

Did you enjoy playing a villain in the movie? Do you prefer the role of a hero or a villain?
I did because it was my first villain role, and I got to do different things and act in a different way. Playing a villain opened my mind to playing different characters and genres in projects. I would probably prefer to play a villain, but both hero and villain roles are fun to play.

You got your start dancing on TV, where did you learn how to move like that? How did you make the transition to acting?
I started dancing when I was around 4 and my mom introduced me to dancing classes in Hawaii. After going to classes for a long time I got the moves.  Three years ago, I went to a workshop in L.A., and that is how I got introduced to acting.

Did you always want to be an actor? Do you prefer acting over dancing?
I never was really into sports. I wanted to pursue something else. When I was 4, I was an MC at my preschool for my grade’s performance. After the performance everyone gave me compliments for doing a great job. When I was 9, I went to a workshop in L.A., while still living in Hawaii. That’s where my acting journey started. My first audition resulted in me getting booked for my first job. It was a commercial and I was a dancing kid. I’ve always loved dancing because I love grooving and vibing to the music. I feel like a part of me has always been a dancer. I prefer acting because it’s my main passion. I will always love both dancing and acting.

How do you feel about moving from Hawaii to LA? What do you like about each place and which do you prefer?
I am happy that I moved, but sad because I can’t see my best friend every day at school or go to the restaurants that I love and visit the beautiful beach. I like Hawaii’s conveniency. Everything is nearby and you don’t have to drive far, which means you don’t run out of gas much. I also like Hawaii’s atmosphere. I like L.A better because you have much more opportunities and experiences that you can embark on. Since California and Los Angeles are so spread out you don’t get bored easily. I also love the people in L.A., and how the freeway is always there. I love the food too! There are sushi restaurants everywhere you go.

You have a lot of upcoming projects in the works! You have a part in Boss Baby 2 releasing in September, you’ve booked a spot on an ABC show, and you are in the process of filming two Nickelodeon shows. What upcoming production are you most excited for?
Each one represents a different type of project and different type of role. I can’t really pick one. I love all the roles.

Being a devout foodie, what are your favorite meals or places to eat?
I love getting sushi or Japanese food, Korean BBQ, Chinese Dim Sum, Italian Food, Thai, and sometimes club sandwiches. I have that American in me. I love izakaya, which are Japanese restaurants, that typically serve fish and meat. You get a variety of food, all of which is delicious.

What got you interested in learning how to use an abacus? Do you ever use it in your daily life?
I wasn’t that good at math when I was young. This changed when I started taking abacus classes in Hawaii. My mom introduced me to these classes, and ever since my math has improved. I have learned to do mental math very quickly and on the abacus. I go to classes a couple times a week and that’s when I would use my abacus. Otherwise, when I’m at a restaurant and my mom is ready to pay, she asks me to calculate the tip. I’m like a calculator.

Do you like to travel? What are your favorite places or places you dream of going to?
I love to travel and would do so if there weren’t a pandemic. I usually go once a year to Japan to see my Japanese relatives on my mom’s side. My favorite places are Japan, Sedona (Arizona), Vegas (for food), and Hawaii. I dream of going to Paris, New York, and Dubai.

What TV shows or films are you currently loving?
I love watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Real Housewives. For film, I like “Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar.“

Are there any celebrities or directors you are hoping to work with in the future?
I would like to work with Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo again. I hope they make a sequel for everyone to get back together.
Who are some of your biggest inspirations? Why do they inspire you?
Kristen Wiig is definitely one of my biggest inspirations. On set I watched her perform a 3-minute monologue and I was in awe. She was so focused and stayed in character throughout.

What is your life motto?
My life motto would be “Keep On Going Till The End.”
