Avantika

Avantika, an Indian American actress, recently broke out as a Disney star in the recently released Disney Feature “Spin” about a young Indian girl coming from a multicultural family finding her identity as a DJ. Avantika has also been featured in several Indian films as well as guest-starring in Disney’s “Diary of a Future President,” produced by Gina Rodriguez.

What made you decide to pursue a career in acting and the performing arts?
I grew up as a dancer (Kuchipudi, Kathak and Ballet) since the age of 5, and I always felt drawn to the movement and expressional aspects of dancing. I was selected for a Dance reality show (ZeeTV Dance India Dance) when I was 10 and the competition was held in Mumbai, India. After experiencing the hub of Bollywood, I fell in love with the film industry. Once I came back to the United States, I seriously pursued an acting career. I trained in various techniques, auditioned, and prepared all of my necessary materials. Taking drama classes at school, doing open call auditions I found online, and watching legendary actors in movies are just some of the things that convinced me that acting was my dream for life.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My mom, of course! But aside from her, my idols include Viola Davis and Meryl Streep. I adore them.

How has acting in India in smaller roles prepared you for your Disney debut?
I think having worked in the Indian film industry has definitely prepared me to put in the work and come into the mindset of on screen acting. And even though they were smaller parts, my schedules and workload were quite hectic. So, it definitely helped my transition into Disney.

How much do you relate to Rhea in ‘SPIN’ and in what ways are you similar?
Rhea is a bubbly, determined, and extraordinarily loyal person. She is definitely relatable in the sense that she's struggling with confidence and having trust in her capabilities—an obstacle many teenagers face. I could relate to her in terms of similar work ethics, morals, and loyalties. We are extremely loyal to the people we care about, and we are deeply passionate about what we do. However, our approach to life and having a sense of humor vary immensely. Rhea has a practical approach to life and everything, whereas I am more of a ‘go with the flow’ kind of person. My sense of humor also differs from Rhea because I'm a lot more sarcastic and drier. Her jokes are slightly goofier.

How has your Indian heritage helped you to connect to your character and her cultural identity?
My Indian heritage and my experiences with my culture have allowed me to connect with Rhea much more clearly. All the way from the kind of food we eat to the way our families support us. I can resonate with her in many different aspects.

As a dancer, how has your relationship to music helped you understand and relate to Rhea’s aspirations to be a DJ?
Being well-equipped with the dynamics of creativity and performing arts, beats, and rhythm of dance and music have definitely made me understand the passion that drives Rhea to be a DJ. Her dreams and aspirations were very relatable to my own aspirations to be a dancer, and later an actor. Throughout the film, Rhea learns the importance of prioritizing, keeping her morals, juggling various things on her plate, and aiming for the stars – all of which are so relatable to my life.

How does it feel to be Disney’s first Indian American star, and what significance does this have to you
Insane. Absolutely insane. The journey from first landing the role to now the releasing of the movie has been supremely surreal. It feels extraordinary to be cast in SPIN and to bring Rhea to life.

What are some struggles you have faced when attempting to breakout into the Hollywood film industry?
I was living in the Bay Area when I first attempted to audition for Hollywood projects. There were not many acting classes to learn from in the Bay Area and not many actors whom I could share the experiences with. So, it was a struggle trying to comprehend the technicalities of auditions and casting until I moved to Los Angeles.
