Greece: Mykonos & Santorini

Santorini

I recently went to Greece and really loved the Greek Islands, specifically Mykonos, which is known as the “Manhattan of the Aegean Sea.”  I am not sure why but it has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with restaurants and endless shops and, of course, a vivid nightlife.  The twenty-five beaches on the islands  have sugar-white sand. Beyond the beaches and parties, the traditional windmills were nice to see and Little Venice had tacky souvenirs. The  islands were a good spot to watch sunsets.  The main area of Mykonos is alluring with white houses, chapels everywhere, narrow alleyways and beautiful cobblestone streets.  I could have spent all my time shopping.  There were endless boutiques with souvenirs and each store had its own style.

Santorini was beautiful too, but different. It was picturesque with the city on top of a huge cliff. There are not many beaches, but there is a volcanic beach.  In fact, the most memorable part of the trip for me  was hiking a volcano and swimming in the Aegean Sea and then watching the sunset.  It was a spectacular day, and I learned that the Aegean Sea doesn’t have sharks.

On Santorini a nice hike takes you from one end of the town to another, and the town is filled with shops and restaurants.  As you walk, you see cliff viewing sapphire waters and chalk-white houses.  However, nothing is cheap on the islands, but they are still must see and  should be on your bucket list.
