How does your character vary from The Princess Switch 3 to your character in Queens of Mystery?
They couldn’t be more different. Mindy, in “The Princess Switch,” has set her sights on getting rich and doesn’t care who gets in the way. She’s loud, volatile, flirtatious, cackles when she laughs, and is not as intelligent as she thinks she is. She’s an incredibly fun character to play. Matilda, in “Queens of Mystery,” is smart, calm, considered, and always thinks of others before herself. She’s not interested in material wealth (unlike Mindy) and would much rather fly under the radar and get her job done well. She’s got a goofy sense of humor and is super awkward around anyone she has a romantic interest in. I reckon they could learn a lot from each other.

Have you ever felt similar to any of the roles you played? If so which one?
I’m definitely more of a Matilda than a Mindy. We’re both very observant and can pick up on tiny shifts in mood and behavior. It’s what makes her a great detective and it’s what helps me to understand how people tick. There’s some of me in all the roles I play, even if it’s a part of me I keep in check. Have I ever bowled into a room and told everyone what I think of them, like Mindy does? Absolutely not. Have I ever had the urge to? Absobloodylutely.

How do you prepare for an upcoming audition?
It’s taken me years to find the right balance with my audition prep. Spend too long on it and I’m guaranteed to over think it and turn up incredibly nervous and more than likely I’ll blow it. But if I under prepare then something is going to catch me out; I’ll have missed a key character trait or I won’t make it through the scene without messing up my lines. So now I make sure I know the lines inside out, I’ve worked out how I connect to the character, I’ve done my research on the project and the people I’m going to meet, and that I’ve chosen an outfit that feels right for the character. Then I just try to enjoy myself! Auditions can be pretty fun when you take away the pressure of feeling desperate to get the job.

What is something you enjoy doing in your free time?
I have the most incredible little Dachshund, Luna, and one of the most therapeutic things in the world is to take her on a walk and watch her bounding through the long grass with her tongue out and her ears back while she tries, and fails, to catch squirrels. I grew up in the countryside so making sure I get my walking boots and raincoat on and being around nature, even in south London, which has amazing parks. Walking with Luna is a really important part of my day.

What’s the best advice you’ve received in your career?
I was taught very early on that being a leading actor is more than just having to learn the most lines and show up for the most scenes. You set the tone on set or in a rehearsal room, and it is your job to make sure everyone around you feels safe and confident and has everything they need. And it’s so true. In “The Princess Switch,” Vanessa arrived every day full of positivity, good humor, and respect for all departments. I never heard her complain once. Even in the middle of the night in the freezing cold snow we kept our senses of humor. We worked together as a team and got on with the job. I went straight from “Princess Switch 3” into “Queens of Mystery,” which was my first lead role on screen, and I worked hard to replicate that example of leadership.

If you weren’t acting what would you be doing?
Oooooh. That’s such a tough one because I’ve been dead certain about being an actor since I was a little kid. But I do obsessively watch videos of chiropractors adjusting backs. (I find that crunching sound weirdly soothing.)  So, maybe I’d train to be a chiropractor.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Amsterdam, without a doubt. I’ve spent a lot of time there, and they've just got it sorted: they’re active, creative, know how to shut their laptops at a reasonable time, and live their lives instead of working themselves into an early grave The bars and restaurants are amazing and the city is breathtakingly beautiful.

Who is your inspiration?
It has to be my Mum. She taught me how to be empathetic and compassionate, and I think those skills lie at the heart of being an actor. It used to drive me insane when I was a kid and someone had upset me at school, and I’d come home convinced Mum would be just as outraged as I was, and she’d say, ‘perhaps they were feeling insecure’ or ‘maybe they have something going on at home.’ It meant I really had to think about what it might be like to walk in someone else’s shoes, and that still fascinates and inspires me.

Whom would you love to co-star with?
I would like for them to rewrite the whole of “Succession” and add me into it so I can work with every member of that cast. Please and thank you.

Do you have a dream role?
Shiv Roy in “Succession.” A modern-day Lady Macbeth with a killer wardrobe.
