The state of Hawaii is a hugely popular vacation destination famous for its gorgeous beaches, ranging from white to even black sand. However, what’s important to note before visiting Hawaii is its history and beautiful culture. Until 1898, Hawaii was an independent nation. In that same year, it unwillingly became a US territory. Hawaii actually has a completely separate history from the rest of the United States, not to mention its own language and values. It was founded on a system “of Aloha, acceptance, and ‘ohana (family)’ that combines with a strong Asian influence that brings with it an interesting mix of duty and honor.” If you visit Hawaii for its sandy beaches and lush environment, respect the culture, support local businesses, preserve its natural beauty, and pick up after yourself. With that in mind, here are some popularly known (and some unknown) vacation spots to check out.

1. Mt Haleakala

Haleakala, a shield volcano, is rumored to be one of the best places on Earth to see the galaxy. Its world-class, night sky conditions make it “one of the most easily accessible places to watch planets and stars after dark,” and these pictures show exactly why. To get to the summit, you’ll need to drive the Haleakala Highway and then take the Haleakala Crater Road.

2. Punalu’u Beach

This beach is famous for its black sand, making it a popular spot for tourists. The black sand is created from lava that flowed into the ocean, cooled underwater, and eventually reached the beach. Called Basalt, the beach is easily accessible from the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, which is the next vacation spot.

5. Waipi’o Valley

If you’re an avid hiker, Waipi’o Valley is the perfect place for you. Cars are not allowed, and it’s about a 6.5-mile hike - definitely not for the faint of heart. However, you’ll be experience secluded views that aren’t visible from outside the valley throughout the hike, possibly including black sand beaches and waterfalls. If you’re not feeling up to the hike, but want to visit, take a tour, either on horseback or van/shuttle.
