Why Are Climate Activists So Upset about A Bra with Fake Nipples?

At the end of October, Kim Kardashian announced her latest SKIMS product, the Nipple Push-Up Bra, and the promotional video has climate activists in an uproar. In the video, the SKIMS’ founder says lines like “unlike the icebergs, these [nipples] aren’t going anywhere,” mocking the climate crisis while wearing a bra made of fossil fuels. Created with nylon and spandex, these materials are made of synthetic polymer and are not biodegradable. Nylon is “made from reacting carbon-based chemicals found in coal and petroleum in a high-pressure, heated environment,” according to Good On You. A similar process is used to make spandex, which takes 500+ years to decompose.

This campaign is a slap in the face to anybody who worries about the climate crisis. By mass producing bras made of drilled oil, SKIMS is accelerating global warming with every bra sold. Despite creating products from a depleted natural resource, SKIMS will donate 10% of Nipple Bra sales to 1 Percent For The Planet, an environmental organization whose members donate at least one percent of their sales to environmental causes. SKIMS is not a part of this organization, but for advertising purposes are attaching their name to them, likely hoping to lessen the frustration of activists.

This isn’t the first-time climate activists have had a bone to pick with Kardashian. Last year, news broke about the amount of water the billionaire wasted at her Hidden Hills home: 232,000 gallons above her municipal water district’s June 2022 budget. Then, sustainable digital marketing agency Yard found that Kardashian releases 609.8 times more CO2 emissions by flying in her private jet than the average air traveler.

In a conversation with Interview Magazine, Kardashian was asked about her thoughts on global warming, to which she responded, “I believe in climate change, and I believe that anything can help. But I also believe in being realistic and I think sometimes there’s so much to worry about on this planet, and it can be really scary to live your life with anxiety,” amplifying her lack of consideration for the planet deteriorating around her while she continues to profit off of selling under-garments made of plastic.

Every environmental activist who saw this video certainly noticed the irony in the campaign, but a lot more SKIMS superfans found the video amusing and thus the bra quickly sold out in every color and size. No matter how many times Kim Kardashian denounces the climate crisis, her fans will continue to blindly support her next environmental misstep.
