SAVANNAH, GEORGIA — SCAD is thrilled to announce the opening of the group exhibition SCAD x Leica: Power in Perspective at the university’s historic Gutstein Gallery in the heart of downtown Savannah. The exhibition celebrates the university’s 45th anniversary and features 45 photographs by SCAD student artists. Power in Perspective conveys the limitless ways women harness strength, resilience, and lived experience to challenge societal norms, break barriers, create change, and exist freely. Embodying ideas, scenes, or stories of empowerment, these works offer diverse interpretations through formal portraits, candid moments, or symbolic imagery that demonstrate how women uniquely shape their communities and the world at large.

“I continue to be impressed by the unmatched creativity and passion that SCAD students bring to projects like this,” said Brittany Richmond, assistant curator of the SCAD Museum of Art. “The freshness of their perspectives on the subject matter of women empowerment and the diversity in their approaches to the medium of photography are incredibly inspiring. These SCAD students are major contenders in the field of photography, and I am so excited that this dynamic exhibition of their work is celebrated as part of SCAD deFINE ART 2024.”

The exhibition is presented in partnership with Leica, the leading camera manufacturer and global photography brand, as part of SCAD deFINE ART 2024 in connection with the Leica Women Foto Project. Many of the exhibiting students had the opportunity to engage with renowned photographer and Leica ambassador Cheriss May, who served as an industry mentor, providing her insight to students at SCAD Savannah and Atlanta locations throughout the project. Many of the participating students also had the opportunity to create their exhibited work using the latest Leica technology and equipment.
