There’s an underlying, yet overpowering, sense of personal intimacy and visceral appeal when it comes to architecture and interior design. The interactions with the space we occupy lend an emotional voice to the exploration of the areas around us. The science of environmental psychology, or sometimes known as the psychology of space, informs us that the space we inhabit impacts our mental and emotional well-being, and influences our moods and behaviors. According to interior designer and environmental psychologist Migette Kaup, “Architectural cues can provide reinforcement to the desired behaviors that we would like to see enacted in specific place types.” Core elements of color palettes, texture, patterns, and lighting delicately intertwine, collectively forming a rich and harmonious balance that enhances our sensory stimulation. Brighter tones invoke a tender warmth and solace, while lighting adds depth and dimension, inviting liveliness, exuberance, and optimism. Subjectively, and unconsciously, we react. Imagine rearranging without flowers in a vase or revamping the walls from white to an off-white. Subtle changes in styling and layouts can make all the difference. Functionality refashions into personality, as architecture and design become physical means of self-expression and personal style.

And while the pandemic has us spending more time at home, interior designers have become more inspired, occupied, and creative than ever. From classic modernism to Parisian contours, here are some of the latest interior designers you’ll want to consider when spicing up your homes.
