Rosalind Eleazar

Rosalind Eleazar plays ‘Louisa Guy’ in Apple TV’s “Slow Horses,” a spy thriller series, alongside Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas, which is currently filming its third series. In 2019 she played Agnes in Armando Iannucci's award winning “The Personal History of David Copperfield” opposite Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie and Tilda Swinton. Rosalind recently wrapped filming “Class of ‘09” for FX, in which she plays ‘Vivienne,’ starring alongside Brian Tyree Henry and Kate Mara.

Other TV credits include the ITV mini-series “Deep Water,” in which she stars alongside Anna Friel in a drama about three mothers with dark secrets; the Starz mini-series “Howards End,” playing Jackie Bast opposite Matthew Macfadyen and Hayley Atwell; and “Harlots,” in which she plays Violet, opposite Liv Tyler, Lesley Manville, and Jessica Brown Findlay. She also appeared in “The Starry Messenger” at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre, playing opposite Matthew Broderick.

In 2020, Rosalind won the Clarence Derwent Award, which recognizes supporting performances on Broadway and the West End stage, for her performance as Yelena in the West End production of “Uncle Vanya,” in which she appeared alongside Toby Jones and Richard Armitage.

How did you get into acting?
I had always done drama at school and the university, then after getting my degree I moved to Ghana for two years to live and work. While I was working there, a good friend of mine called me and asked what happened to pursuing an acting career? I kind of dismissed it at first as I was happy with my life in Ghana, or so I thought,  but I realized I had actually buried my real passion. After some flirting with the idea of a career in acting (it took a while) I luckily managed to get my LAMDA application in on the last day of submission while still in Ghana! I got a place and after finishing my course, my first job was a play at the Royal Court. Things went from there .

Tell us about playing Louisa Guy in “Slow Horses?” What’s your character like?
Louisa Guy is an MI5 agent and has been assigned to a department called Slough house within the agency, where they put people who have made career ending mistakes. They are nicknamed “Slow Horses.” All the Slow horses believe that they have been unfairly moved to this department, so they all  tend to be exceptionally irritable, stubborn, and downright rude. Louisa is one of the more capable slow horses and doesn’t take any crap from anyone; she likes to be independent. However, she is a lonely person at heart and craves love, although she would never show it. She’s complicated.

What kind of preparation did you do for this role?
We had an ex Mi5 agent come in and talk to us about life and work. That was very interesting. It takes a huge toll on your mental health having to lead a double life, so I was interested in what an Mi5 agent has to sacrifice in order to get on with the job. Having any relationship outside of MI5 is almost impossible as you are constantly concealing your real identity. Parts of your soul and being get shut down. So, I really worked from there; what has she lost and what does she crave. She doesn’t get attached easily, so what happens, when by chance, you do fall in love?

What can you tell us about this upcoming season?
We get to know the slow horses better and Louisa and Min take their relationship to the next level; they are thinking about buying a place together, but still in the early stages of their relationship. I don’t want to give any spoilers away if anyone hasn’t seen it yet, but Louisa goes on a huge journey this season, where she has to grapple with loss while continuing to work. In this season we enter the Russian spy world and the implications that has on the slow horses and how they deal with it.

You seem to have played a wide variety of characters. Is there something specific you look for when deciding whether to take a role?
Variety is the key for me but, fundamentally, the writing has to be good, and it has to be a character that sparks my imagination, where I can delve into what makes that person tick. I especially like characters who challenge me and, in a way, frustrate me. It is so much more rewarding to unpick a character over whom you have to obsess and to tear away layers to get to the route of who that person is.

How has “Slow Horses” been different from other series on which you’ve worked?
This is the first series I’ve worked on that will go to four seasons, maybe more, who knows. So, I’ve enjoyed developing my character as the seasons goes on. As an actor and as a human you naturally change and so your character chang changes with you. It is much more of a slow burn working in this way, and in some ways more intricate.

What is it like to work along with Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas?
They are both phenomenal actors. Annoyingly, I haven’t had any scenes with Kristin yet, but she’s a wonderful person when we’ve had chats on set. Gary is hilarious so it’s been a joy to work opposite him.

Do you prefer TV or Broadway roles?
They are quite different. I love them both. What I love about Broadway roles is that you can see a character’s journey through from beginning to end in a few hours. There is a special magic in theatre with a live audience.  I like the unexpected in both theatre and TV, especially when things go wrong because that plunges actors into the present moment and that’s when something electric can happen. It's thrilling.

What are your goals for the future?
So many, I don’t know where to begin. I want to direct for sure, and I’m currently writing a screenplay, so you never know. I also would love to open a restaurant. I love cooking for others. In some ways acting is a bit like cooking; you put all your ingredients together, you do your research, what is going to make this dish rich and full of flavor, much like a character and once you’ve finished, it’s there for others to enjoy, or not.

What are some of your hobbies?
Dancing, I love to dance, anywhere, anytime. Moving your body is food for the soul. Also, SI love squash, which I play most days.
