ReFashion Week Speed Networking Event

On March 2nd, ReFashion Week & Remake NYC hosted the first Clubhouse ReFashion Week event.  “ReFashion Week Speed Networking” had more than 30 speakers from countries around the world. The event provided a great opportunity for each representative to share ideas on how to contribute towards the sustainable future of fashion and how to get in touch with people in the same industry for a future collaboration. Just from the play on words it is evident that Refashion week is a sustainable version of regular fashion weeks, where a series of events like fashion shows and auctions are organized to represent young and sustainable slow fashion brands and independent designers.

Here are some of the brilliant representatives that promoted sustainable lifestyle at the meeting:

Rose Mae Turner, who served as moderator and event host, put the event together. She a sustainable swimwear designer and textile artist based in New York City. She is the founder of Rosina-Mae and her designs have been featured in Buzz Feed, The New York Times, Vogue, and many other magazines. She has also been involved with Refashion Week for the last two years.

Alissa Westervelt is a senior food donation coordinator for the DonateNYC program at the Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability, which provides opportunities to find and donate used items within New York City, as well as to help other nonprofit organizations with the Zero Waste goal to grow and spread their activities.

Sophie Neuhaus is the head of zero waste partnerships at the NYC Department of Sanitation. This position is part of NYC City Service Corps, an AmeriCorps program which is the official nonprofit organization, operated by donations, creates strategies to raise awareness in terms of textile waste, workforce, production and circular design of the citizens of New York in order to keep the city cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable. 

Colette Johnson is Founder & CEO of The PS Collective, a tech-powered platform that seeks to reduce the number of returns of the clothes that do not fit or do not flatter the body shape of customers. Using machine learning and AI technologies, the platform takes into consideration the measurements of the customer and, with the help of algorithm, shows items from independent designers that would likely fit the customer. This makes the shopping process efficient and productive while satisfying the customers’ expectations.

Liliya Temes, an environmentalist, with advanced degrees in Engineering and Energy Policy and Environment from NYU, seeks to merge over 20 years of modeling experience in the fashion industry with her training in environmental sustainability. 

As a founder of Eco Models Management, Liliya changes the concept of modeling, training her employees to use their talent for supporting sustainable lifestyle values and working only with eco-friendly brands. Last year Eco Models NYC had 13 models participate in ReFashion Week’s runway show.

Ruby Ann is a creator of her own jewelry brand Jewels Unite and ambassador of Remake community. She knows that sustainability should start first at the heart of the business. She actively fights for workers’ rights, ethical wages, and a healthy business structure.

Rachael Jean, a sustainable influencer, is a huge fan of finding unique pieces when vintage/thrift shopping and remastering them into a chic and modern garments. She builds a community of people who provide resources for these shops. She is happy to see the role of nostalgia is escalating vintage shopping sales. 

Mel Gillis has been a dealer of vintage for twenty years. Her passion started post high school, when she had a part-time job in a vintage shop. Today, her goal is to connect people with a similar view on thrift shopping in order to create a stronger community. She hopes vintage shopping becomes trendy worldwide.

Edwina Huang, an entrepreneur for winning 6-7 digits companies in Circular Fashion. She is also founder of Vivify Textiles, an online platform selling fine recycled textiles to the designers.
