Hemlock Springs Is On PhotoBook’s RadAR
Hemlock Springs, or Isimeme Naomi Udu, is a 25-year-old singer and songwriter from North Carolina. She did not plan to be a singer as she received a Biology degree from Spelman and a Master of Science degree from Dartmouth. “It was kind of a stress mechanism,” she explains. “Whenever I just wanted to get things out, I was just like ‘I’ll just go on Logic.’ But it was never anything concrete. Just a hobby.” “I’ve always been reticent about revealing that I sing and do Logic on the side,” she explains. Around the start of this year, she made a resolution to own it and start even telling her friends. “I just wanted to get rid of that feeling of embarrassment.”
Her newest pop single, “Girlfriend”, is a funky and retro love song that has gone viral on TikTok and has over one million streams. After releasing one single, Springs was awarded Best New Artist by Pigeons & Planes. She was also put on Spotify’s Radar as an Artist to Watch. In her interview with Spotify, she explains that stress and feeling overwhelmed drives her creativity. Songwriting has become an emotional release as if she is writing in her diary. On TikTok, Springs has garnered a large following for her music as well as her quirky and awkward personality. Not only are fans attracted to Springs’ music, but they love her authenticity and courage to be real on social media.
To express her quirky and eccentric personality, Springs typically dresses in bright colors mixing different textures and prints. Like her music, her style displays a retro sense of nostalgia and familiarity, making her fans feel like her friends. To go along with her funky style, Springs often changes her hair, not afraid to experiment with different colors and cuts. As she is in her music, it is evident that Springs is fearless in her style and self-expression, inspiring fans to do the same.
