Etérea is Overthrow Hospitality's Vegan Mexican Restaurant Located in the East Village

I had dinner at the Gluten-free, vegan restaurant Etérea, which is located in the heart of the East Village, New York City the other week. Food allergens such as soy and nuts are clearly marked on the menu plus the waiter asks if you have any food allergies. There’s no better way to kick off the meal with guacamole and chips; the chips are homemade and the guacamole was so good, we almost wanted to order a second round. Next, we shared the Envueltas and the Mexican Pumpkin soup, which were served in style and the appearance and taste were excellent. The dishes seemed authentic to Mexican style and the server was friendly and attentive. Everything we ate was tasty, fresh, and made us want to come back for more. My friend isn’t a vegan lover, but after visiting this restaurant is open to the possibility. of returning.

Opened in April 2021, Etérea is Overthrow Hospitality's vegan Mexican restaurant, led by Executive Chef Victor Hernandez. His flavors are bold and salute many of Mexico’s regional cuisines, including Oaxacan.

Sother Teague, who also helms the award-winning bar Amor y Amargo, created Etérea's cocktail program that honors Mexico's incredible flavors and drinking traditions and celebrates tequila and mezcal in various styles. “The only rule at Etérea is everything tastes uncommonly delicious and is made with exclusively ethically produced and sourced spirits. I’m especially excited about our cocktails-on-tap that offer top quality without the wait. We are also experimenting with double-barreled cocktails that use a mini solera system that we cobbled together to ensure consistent drinks with a very high percentage of aged liquid all the time,” says Teague.

Etérea’s Name and Design

Etérea is Spanish for “ethereal,” meaning “light and delicate, as if not of this world.” It communicates DeRossi’s vision of a tequila and mezcal bar unlike any other in the city, past or present. Its back bar is designed to conjure a golden church organ, with the room’s arched ceiling a matching color. The deep red velvet tufted banquettes, vividly colorful pillows, and thousands of hanging flowers, all invoke a sense of deep spiritualness, not to be mistaken for religiousness. It is a place that offers an escape, not just from the rat race of the city, but from humanity and Earth itself. The spacious backyard patio includes a custom-built gazebo offering shade and rain protection.
