74th Annual Emmy Awards: Best Red Carpet Looks

On September 12, 2022, the 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards aired on NBC. The show celebrating the best in television is often considered the start of the annual award season. With celebrities wearing chic suits and elegant gowns, the Emmy’s red carpet ushered in the season in style.

PHOTOBOOK’S TOP 5 BEST DRESSED

Elle Fanning in Sharon Long, styled by Samantha McMillan

Elle Fanning, nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “The Great,” asked the show's costume designer, Sharon Long, to design her Emmys gown, which was inspired by Old Hollywood, mainly Grace Kelly and Edith Head, and the look hit the 50s glamor mark perfectly. The pink-lined skirt perfectly highlighted the delicate floral bust, which was perfectly offset by the sleek black corseted bodice. Overall, the gown was a lovely tribute to both the show and the vintage inspiration Fanning wanted.

Rachel Brosnahan in Pamella Roland, styled by Alexandra Mandlekorn

Rachel Brosnahan stunned in a royal blue gown by Pamella Roland. The only jewelry she needed was a pendant necklace that matched the embellishments perfectly. Natural makeup and a slicked-back bun kept the look from being too busy and let the dress shine.

Zendaya in Valentino, styled by Law Roach

Another vintage-inspired look was Zendaya’s custom Valentino dress, which was inspired by one from the brand’s Fall 1978 collection. The custom look changed the original’s silhouette to a ballgown and added pockets. Her voluminous hair and headband combination added the perfect retro charm to the now two-time Emmy winner’s look.

Britt Lower in Cucculelli Shaheen, styled by Jacqueline Zenere

Britt Lower’s fully embellished art-deco-inspired gown was an instant, best-dressed contender for me. The New York City-based brand Cucculelli Shaheen is known for its intricate embroidery, and it literally shines on the red carpet. The matching gloves and equally architectural earrings were the perfect accessories for such a stunning dress.

Tyler James Williams in Thrash Bespoke

Thrash Bespoke is a menswear brand specializing in unique bespoke suiting founded by stylist and designer Quentin Thrash. Tyler James Williams’ custom look was the perfect nod to the classic tailoring we see at these events but with a one-of-a-kind twist--we can see throughout it. Playing with proportions with a cropped blazer and flared pants instantly made Williams stand out from the rest, earning him a spot on our best-dressed list.

PHOTOBOOK’S TOP BRAND

Rodarte

Founded by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavey, Rodarte was the brand that shined the most on the Emmys 2022 red carpet. From the orange sequinned gown on Juliette Lewis to the sleek emerald silk gown on Hannah Einbinder, the dresses the pair created for this event were stunning. My personal favorite however was a combination of both of the aforementioned looks, Sandra Oh’s sleek sequined pantsuit. The bright purple color and expert tailoring definitely solidified Rodarte as the stand-out brand for the night.

PHOTOBOOK’S TOP 5 BEST STYLISTS

Sarah Slutsky, styling Desi Lydic in vintage Roberto Cavalli from Shrimpton Couture

Stylist Slutsky chose a vintage gown from Shrimpton Couture for Desi Lydic. As a magazine that emphasizes sustainability, we love to see a vintage look on the red carpet. The dramatic structured plunge neckline was offset by a sheer flowing skirt. Complete with crystal earrings and a sleek clutch, the look was the perfect mix of vintage and modern glam.

Roberto Johnson styling Sheryl Lee Ralph in Brandon Blackwood

Sheryl Lee Ralph took home her first Emmy after nearly 50 years in Hollywood, and she looked gorgeous doing it. Styled by Roberto Johnson, Ralph wore the first ever gown created by accessories designer Brandon Blackwood. Complete with the brand’s iconic crystal trunk bag that matched the dress lining, this look was an automatic standout. And that’s not even counting the crystal-embellished hair.

Jason Rembert, styling Lizzo in Giambattista Valli

Lizzo earned an Emmy, making her halfway to an EGOT, in a beautiful tulle asymmetric gown by Giambattista Valli. Expertly styled by Jason Rembert, a simple strappy sandal and a messy bun allowed the dress to be the star of the show.

Wendi & Nicole styling Nicholas Hoult in Dior

Sister styling team Wendi & Nicole have mastered the art of modern-day menswear styling. Nicholas Hoult’s custom 70s-inspired Dior suit with flared pants was accessorized with an oversized chain necklace and a diamond choker.

Elizabeth Saltzman, styling Amanda Seyfried in Armani Privé

Last but certainly not least, Amanda Seyfried’s stylist Elizabeth Saltzman brought the glamor for the now Emmy-winning actress’ red-carpet look. A fully embroidered gown with a tulle neckline was kept in the spotlight with minimal jewelry and a slicked-back updo.

CONCLUSION

With a mix of vintage-inspired ensembles and innovative modern silhouettes, the 2022 Emmy’s had a look for everyone’s taste. Overall, if this is just the start to award season, I can’t wait to see what’s coming next.
