Studio 189, NYFW, Spring 2020

Studio 189 was a vibrant and lively show that opened with a booming female voice giving a speech on empowerment in a spoken word style, followed by a dance sequence for the runway entrance. The clothes matched this atmosphere with many colorful dye patterns and prints, inspired by traditional native African craftsmanship. The materials were mostly cottons and linens which seemed light and gave everything a casual element that is very wearable. There were a lot of loose fits with button-ups and collars, even on the dresses; the collection held contrasting colors with either bright primary colors or all black and white neutrals. Another dance performance followed, and some of the models sported small smiles that enhanced the fun, diverse look amongst the classic-looking models and older white-haired models, as well as children holding hands while taking the runway. The upbeat music paired with the celebrity co-founder, Rosario Dawson's, final words summed up the experience as she said "Thank you for celebrating heritage with us."
