Pole Dance Instructor: Heidi Coker

1. Name?
My name is Heidi Coker.

2. Where are you from?

I am from Green Bay, Wisconsin.

3. Where do you live now?

I live in Marietta, Georgia.

4. Profession?
I am a Freelance Sign Lang interpreter and Professional Pole Dance Instructor.

5. How did you get into pole dancing?
I saw Sheila Kelly, with S factor, on an episode of Oprah. She was talking about how Pole Dancing helped her to become more confident in herself, owning her sexuality and her femininity. It also transformed her body physically, to the strongest it had ever been. And how both of these factors have impacted her life in a tremendous way. After hearing that, I was sold!  However, it took me a while to actually get in to take my first class in the summer of 2009.

6. When did you start pole dancing professionally?
My first competition was in the fall of 2010. I earned my pro card a few months later. At this time, it was still a hobby. Soon after, I started competing internationally in 2011. My first experience teaching professionally wasn’t until the the end of 2013/beginning of 2014.  I have been teaching locally at a couple studios and doing multiple private lessons, but working as a traveling instructor came slowly. I didn’t even know that the community existed the way that it did. In May of 2014 I left my full time job to travel full time.

7. Tell us about your fitness background.
I was a competitive gymnast until the age of 21. Competing as an international elite in the US and earning a full ride scholarship to the University of Alabama. I also dabbled in breakdancing, Capoeira, and other aerial arts.  Currently I am mostly participate in Pole, my own style of yoga and tai chi, and freeform dance and movement.

8. What motivates you?
I am motivated by seeing what the mind and body can achieve, from both a physical aspect, as well as a mental and emotional one. Through the years I’ve been motivated by high-level athleticism, and creating new tricks. More recently I’m motivated by searching deep within myself, connecting to energy and using that to inspire movement and creativity. Living a healthy, balanced life style is most important to me.  Also, being able to manage all aspects of my health, inspiring and motivating others to do the same. By living my most authentic life, through my personal expression, I hope to motivate, inspire and empower others to do the same!

9. Who inspires you?
Inspiration comes in many forms. When I see someone who’s dedicated their life to a practice, it inspires me. The level of their practice is not necessarily the main factor, but their quality of life and how they’ve integrated that practice, and how it’s expressed through them is what inspires me.  People who embrace who they are, and openly share that with others with passion and love, also inspires me. Names of specific people are less relevant as we can learn and be inspired by everyone we meet. The students that I work with often inspire me as well! Seeing their dedication and focus, helps me to keep my own enthusiasm for learning!

10. Do you choreograph your routines? If so, where do you find inspiration?
Yes, I always choreograph my own routines. I will reach out to a few trusted individuals to get their personal feedback and critiquing. Inspiration often comes when there something in particular I’d like to share. For a while it was sharing new tricks and ideas for my physical aspect. More recently it’s about sharing more of the emotional journey but life has had me on over the last couple years. Inspiration can come from music, experiences in life, art, nature, poetry or life concepts.

11. What’s next for you?
I’m not 100% sure what’s next. I know that for the moment, I’m enjoying continuing to learn more about myself. I’m focusing on inner exploration and development through different energy practices, spirituality, shamanic work, and finding a balance in my life. At the moment I feel like I’m a transition to the next phase.I will definitely continue to Pole and possibly compete again at a later date. I’m excited to see where life leads me!

12. What is your motto in life?
I have a couple mottos that I deeply believe in. One of them being,  I have a couple mottos that I deeply believe in. One of them being, ‘Be uniquely you’ and also, ‘be fearless in finding yourself’.  When we truly honor who we are, that is when we can give the most to this world and those around us. We forgotten who we are in our true self and I want to help people remember how incredible they are!
