Emerging Fashion Designer: Di Gao
1. Designer Name?
My name is Di Gao.
2. Where are you based?
I am based in New York City.
3. Where are you originally from?
I am from China.
4. Where did you study fashion design? What was that experience like?
I studied at Parsons FASHION MFA. It was a very intense program but a really helpful experience for my future career. I really appreciate everything that happened in the Parsons MFA program because I got huge insight and a deeper understanding about what I want to do and where I want to go.
5. Did your education open doors for you? If so how?
Yes of course. It’s a perfect platform for me to train myself deeper as a fashion designer. It made me more mature to face my career in the future.
6. Please tell me about your current Spring/Summer collection? What was your inspiration
My new capsule collection is a further development from my last collection which is my final thesis of Parsons MFA program. It is inspired by the traditional Chinese architecture. I try to combine the decoration and the function of it with traditional techniques like crochet and knitting. I always try to break the rules and create something new with something old.
7. When did you start designing? What led you to that direction?
I started fashion design when I entered collage. I always had a deep interest in fashion design since I was really young. I would always focus on garments whenever I watched TV, movies or Opera since I was little. And I even tried to imagine what kind of outfits the novel characters would wear when I was reading books.
It came pretty naturally for me to chose fashion design because I couldn’t imagine any other majors I would choose.
8. Please tell me one of your favorite designers and why?
Yohji Yamamoto. I think he is a very talented designer and I really admire what he creates and the whole style he manifests. He is the type of designer who really focuses on details and treats fashion design as a philosophy which always give me a lot of inspiration .
9. What is your goal for the next upcoming years as a designer?
I want to get some more experience of working for some big fashion brands which is useful for my future plan as well as developing my own line.
10. What is your motto in life?
Stay foolish, stay hungry.
Street Talk, which supports emerging brands that merit being discovered and what’s happening in fashion.
